How to Fill Out the WA Logbook – Step-by-Step Guide for Learner Drivers and Supervisors

Learning to drive in Western Australia? Whether you're a learner or a supervisor, understanding how to correctly complete the WA Logbook is essential. In this post, we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step so you can stay on track, avoid common mistakes, and get closer to your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).

What Is the WA Logbook?

The WA Logbook is used to record the required 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 5 hours of night driving. This is mandatory before you can sit your PDA and get your licence.

You’ll receive your logbook when you pass the Computerised Theory Test (CTT) and are issued a learner’s permit.

Who Can Supervise a Learner Driver?

Your supervisor must:

  • Be aged 21 or over

  • Have held a valid Australian driver’s licence for 4+ years (in the correct class)

  • Be seated beside you at all times while driving

How to Fill Out the Logbook Correctly

Each logbook entry must include:

  1. Date of the drive

  2. Start and end times

  3. Duration of the drive (in hours and minutes)

  4. Conditions (e.g. night, wet, heavy traffic)

  5. Type of driving (e.g. residential, highway, parking practice)

  6. Supervisor’s full name and signature

You must total at least 50 hours, and you’ll need to clearly mark 5+ hours of night driving (drives between sunset and sunrise).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to include night drives

  • Using incorrect or unreadable dates/times

  • Missing signatures from supervisors

  • Logging unrealistic or suspicious driving times

Tip: The Department of Transport may reject incomplete or messy logbooks — so take your time and double-check your entries!

Can I Use a Digital Logbook?

Yes! The Learn&Log app by the WA Department of Transport is a digital option that meets all requirements. It also automatically tracks your progress.

But if you’re using the physical logbook, make sure to write neatly and include all details as required.
