How to Fill Out the WA Logbook – Step-by-Step Guide for Learner Drivers and Supervisors
Getting your WA learner logbook right is an important step towards earning your P plates. Whether you're a learner driver clocking up your hours or a supervisor helping someone prepare for their licence, this guide will show you exactly how to complete every section correctly.
By the end, you'll know what needs to be recorded, who can supervise you, and how to avoid the mistakes that can delay your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).
Step 1 – Add Your Supervising Driver(s)
Before you start recording your driving hours, every person who will be supervising your driving should complete one of the sections at the front of your logbook.
This includes parents, relatives, friends, or a licensed driving instructor.
Each supervising driver only needs to complete one section, regardless of how many times they take you driving. If your mum supervises 40 drives, she only fills out this page once. If your dad supervises as well, he'll need to complete a separate section.
Each supervisor must provide:
Their full name
Their driver's licence number (or instructor licence number if they're a driving instructor)
Their phone number
Their signature
The date they completed the declaration
To supervise a learner driver in Western Australia, a person must either hold a current driving instructor's licence, or have held a valid licence for the class of vehicle being driven for at least four years. If a supervisor's licence was suspended, cancelled or disqualified at the time they supervised your driving, those driving hours cannot be counted towards your required 50 hours.

If you know someone will be supervising you regularly, get them to complete this page before your first drive together. It's one less thing to remember later, and it ensures every hour they supervise can be properly recorded.
Step 2 – Record Every Driving Session
Every supervised driving session lasting at least 10 minutes should be recorded in your WA learner logbook.
For each drive, your supervising driver should complete the relevant row by recording:
Their name
Their driver's licence number or instructor licence number
Their signature
The date
Your start and finish times
The number of minutes driven during the day
The number of minutes driven at night
Night driving hours are counted separately because you'll need to complete at least five hours of night driving as part of your 50-hour requirement before sitting your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).
If you make a mistake while filling out your logbook, don't use correction fluid or try to scribble it out. Simply draw a single line through the incorrect entry and complete it again on the next available line.
GOAT Tip
Fill your logbook out before you leave the car. It's much easier to remember the exact times and driving duration while the drive is still fresh than trying to work it out days or weeks later.
Step 3 – Complete Your Declaration Before Your PDA
Once you've completed your required supervised driving hours, there's one final page that needs to be completed before your driving test.
On the declaration page, you'll confirm that you've completed:
A minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving
At least 5 hours of night driving
The learner driver must sign the declaration, and the supervising driver must also complete and sign their section to confirm that, to the best of their knowledge, the recorded driving hours are accurate.
You'll need to present your completed WA learner logbook when attending your Practical Driving Assessment, so don't leave this page blank. It's a simple step, but it's probably the one I see forgotten most often.

Don't wait until the morning of your PDA to complete this page. Once you've finished your required hours, complete the declaration while everything is still organised and ready to go.
Can I Use a Digital Logbook?
Yes. Instead of using the paper logbook, you can now record your supervised driving hours digitally using Learn&Log within the ServiceWA app. The original Learn&Log app has been discontinued and all new users should access the service through ServiceWA.
To get started, you'll need to:
Download the ServiceWA app.
Sign in using a Standard-strength myID Digital ID.
Link the Learn&Log service from the app's Discovery tab.
Log in with your DoTDirect account to begin recording your supervised driving hours.
Learn&Log automatically records your trips, totals your day and night driving hours, and stores your supervising driver details, making it a convenient alternative to the paper logbook.
GOAT Tip
If you forget to start recording your trip in Learn&Log, you can manually add retrospective trips later—but only up to a total of 10 hours. After that, any missed driving sessions will need to be recorded in a paper logbook instead. Get into the habit of having your supervising driver start the trip before you drive away, so you don't risk losing valuable hours.
