About GOAT Driving

Driving is freedom — and in Western Australia, that freedom can change everything.

 

I’m Cameron Haughey, a qualified driving instructor based in Perth, WA. I obtained my Cert IV in Transport from Miro Training Centre.

​

Since 2019, I’ve worked with hundreds of learner drivers across a wide range of situations — from complete beginners to people preparing for their Practical Driving Assessment (PDA), and even those needing to be reassessed for medical or age-related reasons.

​

GOAT Driving exists to give you a clear, structured path to passing — even if you don’t have the budget for ongoing one-on-one lessons.

​

My Experience

 

Over the years, I’ve worked with learners in situations that require more than just basic instruction.

​

That includes:

• Students supported through the NDIS, including those with autism, clinical anxiety, and other conditions

• Drivers returning to the road after serious injuries or accidents, including brain injuries requiring reassessment

• Older drivers (80+) completing fitness-to-drive assessments

• Learners who have failed multiple PDAs and need targeted correction

These experiences have shaped how I teach.

​

Because passing your test comes down to a lot more than just being able to drive.

​

You need to stay calm under pressure, understand what assessors are looking for, and build good habits that still hold up when you’re nervous on test day.

Why I Started GOAT Driving

 

Every now and then I’d get students who were doing lessons as a gift, and once they’d done one or two, they couldn’t afford to continue.

​

That was always difficult to see happen, because in Western Australia it’s incredibly hard to pass your driving assessment without professional help.

​

When you fail a PDA, the assessor gives you feedback, but they can’t really go into much detail or actually show you how to do things properly. And most students probably aren’t fully taking in the feedback anyway, because they’ve just been told they failed. Their mind is still processing that news.

​

So it’s really hard to make meaningful progress from one PDA to the next based only on the assessor’s feedback.

​

And getting your licence in Perth is important.

​

It can be the difference between getting a job or missing out on one. It can be the difference between being able to explore this incredible state or only being able to go where our public transport system can take you.

​

That’s why I decided to build goatdriving.com.

​

The lesson plans on the site are the exact lesson briefs I use to teach my students. I wanted to create another way for people to learn — one that didn’t cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars in driving lessons.

​

If you have someone who can supervise you, you can still learn with the same structure and information you’d get from a top-tier driving instructor, just at a fraction of the cost.

​

And my goal is to keep making the information easier to understand and easier to apply, just like I’ve been doing for the past 7 years.

Why It Matters

 

Getting your licence in WA can make a huge difference to your life.

​

It can help you get to work, support your family, and have more freedom and independence day to day.

​

But learning to drive can get expensive very quickly, especially if you’re relying only on professional lessons.

​

And finding a good driving instructor can honestly be a gamble.

​

Most people assume all driving instructors are organised, patient, reliable, and good at explaining things. The reality is that genuinely good instructors are a small percentage of the industry.

​

I’ve heard plenty of stories from learners who paid good money only to end up with instructors who made them more anxious, confused, or uncomfortable behind the wheel. For some learners, one bad experience can completely destroy their confidence.

​

A lot of people also end up spending money on lessons without really understanding what they should be improving between sessions. Others get mixed advice from different people, or go into their PDA without properly understanding what assessors are actually looking for.
