What’s the Cheapest Way to Get Your Licence in WA?

Getting your licence in WA can feel expensive — especially when professional lessons cost upwards of $70 an hour. Most learners will need at least 6 professional lessons, and I’ve seen many who need to complete their full 50 hours with an instructor because they don’t have a supervisor or car available. That adds up to thousands of dollars.

But here’s the good news: there are smarter, cheaper ways to do it without cutting corners.

Option 1: Professional Driving Lessons

Professional lessons are the traditional route. You get a qualified instructor (like me), a dual-control car, and direct feedback. They’re valuable — but expensive. At $70+ per hour, even just 10 lessons will cost $700. If you don’t have a supervisor, and rely fully on lessons to complete 50 hours, that’s over $3,500.

👉 I still offer on-road lessons if you’d like to request one — you can use the form on my Home Page to get in touch.

Option 2: The RYDE Program

The RYDE Program is an amazing initiative for learners aged 16–25 who don’t have access to a suitable supervisor or vehicle.

  • Sessions cost just $15 for 90 minutes.

  • You usually pay around $60 upfront for a driver assessment before starting.

  • RYDE operates in places like Joondalup, Mandurah, Cockburn, Bassendean, the South West, and more.

  • You’re paired with a volunteer mentor (not a qualified instructor) who supervises your practice.

RYDE is by far the cheapest way to get supervised hours in WA if you don’t have a supervisor — but remember, it’s about getting hours, not structured training.

Option 3: GOAT Driving DIY Lesson Plans

This is where I come in.

I created GOAT Driving’s DIY Lesson Plans to give learners the exact same structure I use when teaching my students on-road. These plans have helped hundreds of learners pass their PDA, many of them on their first attempt.

Here’s what makes the lesson plans different:

  • ✅ Created by me — a qualified, experienced instructor.

  • ✅ Available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

  • ✅ Includes a 1-week free trial so you can see the value for yourself.

  • ✅ Covers everything from first drive to PDA prep.

  • ✅ Direct support from me: if you’re not sure where to practise a specific skill, I’ll personally help you find locations in your area.

This is the affordable alternative to professional lessons: you get the premium structure without the premium cost.

Option 4: GOAT Driving + RYDE Program = The Cheapest Combo

The smartest approach? Combine my structured lesson plans with RYDE sessions.

  • Use the lesson plans to know exactly what to practise each session.

  • Use RYDE’s $15 sessions to get your supervised hours if you don’t have family or friends available.

  • Save thousands compared to paying for professional lessons alone.
