Everything You Must Know Before Your Mirrabooka Driving Test (PDA)

I've been helping students pass their driving tests in Mirrabooka for more than 7 years, and more than 60% of my students pass on their first attempt. If you want to pass first time, there are a number of things you should be prepared for before booking your PDA at this licensing centre.

Despite its reputation, Mirrabooka is one of the easiest assessment centres in WA. But it does still present some challenges - some of them could be considered positives at the same time.

Lower Traffic Volume

Generally speaking, there is much less traffic in Mirrabooka than you might find in Midland, West Perth or even Joondalup. Mirrabooka is busiest in the morning rush. It starts to quieten down after 9am, and then begins to build up again from about 3pm.

The best time to book your driving test in Mirrabooka would be between those times. This lack of traffic may make it sound like it's easier, but it actually makes predicting the test routes in Mirrabooka much more difficult. Essentially, the assessors can take you 10 minutes away from the licensing centre in any direction - Nollamara, Westminster and Balga are the most common destinations though.

The lower traffic volume also makes it much easier to become complacent and switch off. The driving test lasts about 35 minutes, and often the mistakes that cause students to fail come from just a few seconds of lost concentration.

Defensive driving is particularly useful in this area because it helps keep you engaged with your surroundings. It's without doubt the most important lesson we cover in both our on-road lessons and our online driving guidance. You can sign up for as little as $12.90 to gain access to our online material today.

Dual Carriageways

There are many places where an assessor might ask you to turn across a dual carriageway, where there is an opportunity to wait in the median strip - so you must be comfortable with navigating these particular intersection types.

Crucially, it's important to understand that if you're turning right from Flinders Street onto Ravenswood Drive, you cannot stop in the middle of the road because the intersection isn't structured in the same way. There are two turning lanes running side by side, so stopping in the middle would obstruct traffic.

School Zones

School zones are everywhere in Mirrabooka, and on the main roads too. If your test falls within the 7:30–9:00am or 2:30–4:00pm school zone periods, you need to be constantly alert for school zone signs.

You need to be at or below 40kph when you enter the school zone, and you need to keep that speed below 40kph until you pass the 'End School Zone' signs.

Stop For Shopping

Most commonly, you'll be taken to the Nollamara Shopping Centre car park for the stop-for-shopping exercise. Here you will need to pay attention to the stop lines that are marked in the carpark. Stop lines still apply in car parks.

If you get taken to Northlands Plaza Shopping Centre for the stop for shopping exercise, well that can be much more difficult. The car park adjacent to Wanneroo Road sits on a fairly steep hill and can be quite challenging for learner drivers. You must pay attention for stop lines if you're in this carpark too.

Overtaking Parked Cars

Mirrabooka has plenty of parked cars along residential streets. You must know the correct procedure to overtake parked cars, because if you make mistakes it can add up quickly.

During the left-something-behind exercise, if you need to pass parked cars, focus on doing that correctly before worrying about where you'll turn around or looking for the nominated house.

Returning to the D.O.T. Carpark

When you return to the Department of Transport car park, you must look both left and right before turning right or entering one of the bays directly ahead.

The shrubs on the left are much more overgrown than in the reference picture, so it can be hard to see past them. If you do not look to the left, you will fail.

Summary

Mirrabooka is, in my opinion, the easiest assessment centre in the Perth Metro area. If you understand the road rules and can maintain your concentration for 35 minutes, you should have every chance of passing here.

If you'd like some on-road lessons or a mock test before your Mirrabooka PDA, you'll be learning with an instructor who has spent years helping students pass at this assessment centre. I also have a special running until the end of June, with all lessons priced at $70 per hour — significantly below the rates charged by most driving schools in Perth. If you want to book in before the end of the month, you'll need to be quick.
